The 3 Major Benefits Of Meditation

There are 3 major benefits of meditation that should interest any new beginner who is thinking of learning how to meditate or has just started their meditation journey.

The 3 major categories can be broken down in the following way…

1/ Health related benefits to meditation;

2/ Physical related benefits to meditation; and

3/ Spiritual related benefits to meditation.

What Are The Major Benefits Of Meditation For Beginners

Meditation Is A Journey And Not A Quick Fix

Firstly, as I’ve preached throughout the UChillOut website meditation is an individual thing, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve with your daily meditation practice.

Thus, you need clarity as to your intentions for wanting to meditate.

Understanding meditation is a journey, it’s not a fad, it’s not a quick fix for whatever you need fixing, it’s a lifestyle change that will take you to where you want to go or what you desire to reach and beyond…always remember it’s a journey!!!

Also I’d like to state from the outset that there have been many studies and countless research that have been conducted into the benefits of meditation, such studies and research continue as more and more academics and professionals discover the huge benefits daily meditation offers. While the western world continues its discovery phase the eastern culture has known of its power and benefits since the dawn of time.

Ultimately, as previously mentioned, it boils down to the individual, to you and how you meditate, why you meditate, how long you meditate and how consistent you are with your daily meditation.

It is entirely up to you and who you are that will determine the level of results you will attain from practicing meditation. As the studies show no two individuals are alike and every participant in each and every study or research conducted shows varied results and in some cases quite the opposite.

Don’t be disheartened by other peoples results and focus on what you are trying to achieve. Concentrate on the doing, being consistent with your daily meditation practice because it’s very easy to get caught up with life and miss a day, or two or more in a row and totally dismiss your meditation altogether.

Thus, losing the momentum, the energy that you had gathered and having to start all over again becomes so much more difficult.

The list of benefits of meditation reads like a “war and peace” novel and one has to seriously dispute whether each benefit has been scientifically proven…

It’s also debatable if practising meditation consistently will have the same effect on you…

And to what degree will meditation change who you are, your health, and your outlook on life for the better?

No one knows up front and only you can be your own judge, is meditation a “placebo effect” that allows your body’s many, many, many chemicals to combine to produce the right antidote to heal your ills and wounds?

Does meditation alter your mind, restructure your brain to produce a better, more efficient and effective you?

And to what extent?

Just because we can list 100’s of so-called benefits of meditation does it not in essence give meditation that magical power to clone the perfect you?

Can practicing meditation daily give you instant spiritual access to Godly powers, knowledge and foresight?

So please take caution to the plethora of articles written on the so-called benefits of meditation and have an open mind to its power, understanding that it’s a lifelong journey to your ultimate destination in life wherever that is….for YOU!!!

Meditation Is A Tool For Deeper Connection

Meditation is a Tool For Deeper Connection

Understanding that meditation is a tool to be used for deeper connection to energy within that lies dormant just waiting to be tapped into…a tool that can and will assist you in the discovery of the true you and the essence of your being.

This is the purpose of this article to illustrate how and why mediating daily, consistently, effectively can truly be the sharpest tool in your armory.

I will attempt to present you with a more profound perspective rather than just provide you with a list of regurgitated benefits you can find plastered all over the internet.

Also, understanding that the way you live your life in the hustle and bustle world of today, stress and the way you act and react to the stressors encountered is the prominent cause of all imbalances you experience on a day-today basis

Stress The Number One Health Killer And Daily Meditation As Your Savior

Stress of living life in today’s society and the demands society has put on each and every one of us has caused us to react to these stressors in many destructive ways. Over eating, lack of eating, substance and alcohol abuse, mental issues, harmful and hurtful behavior and the ultimate escape of suicide.

Stress has a decaying effect on both your body and mind, if you allow it to dominate you and not motivate you.

Stress arises when you face obstacles and challenges pursuing the things you want from life and the things you want out of life…

Stress arises when you face obstacles and challenges pursuing the things you want from life and the things you want out of life…

Stress is a reaction to the perspective that you create…when you choose to be a victim you choose to rescind taking responsibility for creating the life that you want, desire and deserve.

The reason you interpret situations as stressful is because you are a primal being. We have a “fight or flight” response mechanism that evolves over time and the environment we keep.

Your body reacts to situations depending on its intuitive wisdom and as a result your body begins to prepare itself to act and react in certain ways accordingly.

In perceived stressful moments your breath becomes very shallow, your heart starts pumping, pushing more blood to your muscles tensing them in preparation for a fight if you need strength or flight of you need to quickly escape.

During this process your blood flow is being diverted away from your digestive system amongst other systems within your body.

By now your body has reacted to the moment by pumping itself full of stress hormones and adrenaline. Replacing the healthy growth hormones like DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone). As a result your blood pressure rises, your heart starts pumping faster and all you have succeeded in doing is putting yourself in a state of chaos.

Understanding that some stressors are actually productive for you it’s what motivates and inspires you in many cases to reach goals and beyond. It’s the everyday nagging stressors that can wear your immune system down making you more susceptible to illness and disease.

Shallow breathing creates respiratory problems, the increased blood flow to muscles creates hypertension, the decreased blood flow to your digestive system creates digestive problems and the decrease of blood flow to your sexual organs creates sexual performance problems amongst other things.

This is the process that leads to stress and tension in the body and disease…that is not being in a state ease.

In the modern world we live in the “fight or flight” process which once was our defensive mechanism is now our source of stress and tension and it’s very, very, very deadly.

Stress is detrimental to your health, it plays havoc on your mind, your body and your soul, it has a decaying effect on your life because when you are stressed you not only feel like “shit” but it’s also difficult to maintain any sense of clarity, energy or well-being.

Stress Relief With meditation

Meditation A Stress Reduction For Beginners

Now this is where daily meditation practice kicks in…

Meditation has been scientifically proven to be one of the best methods for dealing with stress.

When your eyes are closed, you’re breathing consciously and you become totally relaxed, everything that happens in the “fight or flight” response is reversed…a polar opposite of the stress response.

Your breath becomes very full and easy, your blood pressure returns to normal, your oxygenated blood returns to its healthy flow to the digestive tract and to the rest of your body. You begin to reproduce healthy growth hormones, your immune system becomes stronger and you return to a normal, healthy, state of balance and well-being.

Meditation has the ability to take you into an even deeper state of relaxation than sleep. With consistent daily meditation your bodily systems become stronger and stronger. Your body relaxes even further allowing it to rest and recover fully increasing your experience of abundance of energy.

Your immune system gets stronger and your body’s ability to combat illness and disease increases. Sickness becomes a dirty word that you avoid like the plague.

More importantly the manner in which you deal with stressful situations also changes and life becomes simpler, easier and liveable again.

Because the you are stressed out the more your body becomes tense and fatigued. In turn your mind becomes sluggish and lacks any clarity and you become frustrated, confused irritable and angry. Again creating the same unhealthy scenario you experienced during the “fight or flight” response situation.

During this phase of unease sleep becomes an issue as your mind is cluttered and forever wandering, resulting in your body becoming increasingly fatigued and over tired and so a vicious cycle of frustration begins and your body changes to a state of unease of illness and disease.

As you begin to meditate daily, consistently, your body receives a greater restorative rest, releasing years of disruptive and deadly stress and tension build up that has calcified within your body and mind.

This release results in more energy, a new you full of life, peace and happiness.

All of a sudden, you are achieving much more and with greater ease and flow. Life begins to fit perfectly within your dreams and aspirations all that much easier, with grace and abundance you rightfully deserve with all that you desire.

…and some!

Not only is your daily meditation practice physiologically helping you get higher quality rest, but it’s giving you new found energy and clarity to interact with the world in so many different ways, that you begin to attract good in your life while avoiding the bad.

Life doesn’t seem as stressful because you are willing and able to react to the stressors that come your way in a different and more productive way.

You begin to see positives in every negative life challenges you with…

When you are no longer choosing to perceive everyday stressors as stressful and you are no longer suffering from the repercussions of stress (“fight or flight” response and its bodily effects) and you are getting deep restful sleep, you are more able to make the choices that result in living the life you desire and deserve.

You are no longer controlled by your responses to stress but in control of them…

So purely from a health and mental health perspective meditation is one of the greatest gifts known to man. Not only is it heavenly for the mind but also for the body and soul.

By meditating daily you will experience mental, emotional and physiological benefits. You will come to believe in and appreciate the value meditation brings to your life, all you have to do is make it a habit of doing consistently, everyday…make it a journey and not a fad!!!

Thus, meditating daily allows you to…

1/ Prevent stress from penetrating your system; and

2/ It releases the built up stress that is already in your system.

The Real Spiritual Purpose Of Meditation

The real purpose of meditation is to lead you to liberation. Meditation is both an ancient  practice and a present day modern mind-body technique for relaxing the body and calming the mind.

It is a process of re-centering your awareness to connect with your inner genius…the real you, your true essence in life…some call it “Pure Consciousness”.

The real purpose of meditation is to direct your mind away from external distractions towards a more inwardly direction with the help of your breath and through it to your real “self”.

Breath is the conduit between body, mind and spirit…

By closing your eyes you physically shut out external distractions and disturbances. In meditation you begin with the awareness of physical breath.

The Real Spiritual Purpose Of Meditation

Swami Vishwatmananda describes it ever so eloquently as follows…

“This breath-awareness, first guided by some preceptor, and then done spontaneously, when cultivated correctly and regularly, leads us to a realm of higher and higher states of awareness which enables us to perceive gradually the subtle movement behind the physical breath. And ultimately we come into contact with the real Self.”

“The mind is compared by agitating thoughts that are compared to the waves. Water of the lakes becomes muddy when there are waves. As a result, the bottom of the lake, that is, our Self, is not visible. In the same way, when thought-waves do not arise and the mind is ruffled, the Self is reflected in that calm mind.”

Meditation is neither reasoning nor just contemplation. It is the continuous flow of mind towards the Divine, the Life Source, etc…call it what you wish.

Our real Self is one of perfection and free spirit. But since we have lost our way we feel trapped, imprisoned, bounded by the restraints of social expectations in the modern world we live in and thus we suffer the consequences of being stuck…

Daily meditation is the journey, the way to self-awakening, the way to freedom from suffering and limitations imposed by social conformity.

Swami Vivekananda says, “Manifesting the divinity within you (your calling) and everything will be harmoniously arranged around it.”

Thus, meditation is the ultimate guide in your spiritual journey. Daily meditation practice allows your consciousness to evolve eventually with time to higher levels of refined states of consciousness well beyond comprehension or belief to the majority of mere mortals.

If you make meditation a daily habit, confusion, frustration and anger will be controlled and tamed, you will have an open mind to the challenges life throws at you and better deal with issues with greater clarity and assurance.

At which point everyday living stresses become meaningless and futile in grandier picture of living, experiencing and preparing for whatever lies beyond the present life and into the after-life…

The Benefits Of Meditation To Your Body, Mind And Soul

One of the purpose of meditation is to transcend the usual limitations of human consciousness and expand to higher levels of consciousness. This can be achieved by stilling your mind allowing you to distance yourself from its constant chatter.

The mind can then travel beyond its normal parameters into a zone that can only be experienced.

“The mind can only experience the totality of creation through the process of meditation”.  Michael Reed Gach – Acu-Yoga

Most people operate on a daily basis from a superficial perspective which is very limiting. They are totally identified with their egos and personalities, which are protected by such superficialness. They have not yet formed a sense of themselves beyond their personalities, that divine, eternal spark of unlimited awareness. Your mind just like your body can become stiff, rigid and inflexible, closed to new ideas and perspective. As the body contracts the mind forms layers of resistance, which become the limitations of human consciousness.

Meditation is the tool that allows you to go past and beyond these limitations. However, it does take effort, it takes consistency, it does take patience and it does take time and discipline to achieve results with it.

The many benefits physically, mentally and spiritually that can be had through meditating daily is so rewarding that it becomes a joy to practice and not a chore of doing.

Whatever effort you put into your daily meditation practice returns to you many, many, many times over, so that your life begins to grow and expand in so many ways you had never imagined. Meditation releases this process of self-fulfilment.

The stillness achieved during meditation also slows down the metabolism of your body providing you with a deeper state of rest with great therapeutic benefits rejuvenating your entire body, especially the all important nervous system.

Conclusion

Amongst the plethora of information scouring the web regarding the many benefits of meditation the three you need to focus on are health related benefits, physical related benefits and the spiritual related benefits to meditation.

Understanding that these benefits of meditation require you to consistently practice daily meditation that best suit you needs and desires. Gaining clarity as to why you are meditating from the outset allows you to achieve better results as your perception to life begins to change and unfold.

Meditation provides a calmer you reducing the stress and tension of everyday living so you may better deal with the daily issues of living.

Though the studies and research on the many benefits of meditation ultimately is an individual thing accepting that to reap the rewards of the 3 major benefits of meditation you need to view your daily practice as a journey and not a quick fix fad…
